SR20DE: The Forgotten Ones

Sunday, 15 November 2009 05:00 The Webmaster Lifestyle

nissan se r sentra

The drifting craze brought attention to Nissan's now famous 180SX and 240. That exposure also put the spotlight on one of Nissan's most famous motors, the SR20DE. Something is missing. Oh yes, I forgot the "T" on the end.

I left out the  "T" for turbo because all USDM SR20 motors come normally aspirated from the factory. For those that are swapping SR20DET motors in their 180's and 240's, you may not realize that the SR20DE comes factory equipped into five US Nissan models and one 4wd JDM model that has the "T" on the end. Although five of these models are FWD they are just as potent as any RWD SR20 powered vehicle. The best part is you do not need a motor swap! There are a number of companies that produce full bolt on Turbo kits. You will also find numerous intake and exhaust manifolds to turn your FWD N/A powered SR20 into a turbocharged monster. The motor can take up to 400 hp on stock internals. I have seen as much as 500 on a FWD stock Nissan motor. One reason why these Nissans are not as popular as the RWD's is due to the drift craze. Another reason is the weak gearbox which can safely handle up to 250hp. Anything higher than that, you will need an upgrade. PAR Engineering solves this issue with their synchromesh and dog engagement gear-set. Well enough said. Here are Nissan's six other SR20 powered vehicles.

Jamie Marsh's 1995 - 1998 200SX SE-R (B14)

Jamie is a member of CT SR20Deep. This model also comes in a four door.

Jamie's ride produces over 500hp

Mods include: T3/T67, N1 throttle body, Precision 1000cc injectors, JWT 96lb turbo program, JWT S3 cams and a Lightning MAF just to name a few.

Equipped with a SR20VE NEO VVL Turbo

Instead of the factory SR20 Junior opted for the VVL

"The SR20VE is the most common engine with NEO VVL. There have been two main versions of this engine. The first version made 187 hp and 145 lb·ft torque. This engine was used by Nissan from 1997 to 2001. It is found in the Nissan Primera and the Nissan Bluebird. The second variant of the SR20VE is only found in the 2001 and, later, the P12 Nissan Primera. The non-turbo version of the SR20VE makes 204 hp, and 152 lb/ft torque. This engine is commonly known as the SR20VE '20V'." - Wikipedia

Honda fans, Nissan also has an "egg."

nissan sr20

Infinit G20

If you need a little more luxury and four doors, the Infiniti G20 is an excellent choice. With the added weight, the factory SR20 is screaming for forced induction.

2001 - 2001 Sentra SE (B15)

1991 - 1994 Nissan Pulsar GTi-R (RNN14)

Now this is the bad boy of them all. An all wheel drive SR20 powered hatch! Although they are not made in the U. S. you can still import them. You can find many cruising the streets in Florida.

Turbonetics is one company that makes an aftermarket bolt-on turbo kit for the FWD SR20. The kit was originally created by F-Max until they were bought by Turbonetics. If you cannot find a kit it's very easy to have one custom made.

There is other options for the trans not just a par gearbox that will break your bank. The p11/b15 trans swap into the earlier models and are far superior to the earlier model trans. Also Fred Casey used a stock b13 transmission and made over 100 passes in his drag car with 500whp running into the 10's There is also the VET that comes in the Xtrail overseas.

Yes I totally forgot about the P11 and B15 Tranny. Those are really hard to find. If I remember, the G20T tranny also has a longer gear ratio which suits fwd turbo powered SR20's very well. Now that one is a rare find.

interesting article...that B13 looks crazy! You taught this Honda guy a few things about FWD SR20s. Did you have Par Engineering build your tranny?

If you mean custom, no. I look to purchase a gearset from them in the future. Click on the the PAR link. They produce gearsets for a number of vehicles.

Yes the B15/P11 trans are far superior to the old ones by use of a stronger case, 50% thicker gears and not only that they are better designed as far as the complete gearstack uses. The gearstack uses bearings on both gearstacks at both ends unlike the earlier models that use bearings on the bellhousing side and only one bearing on the main imput gearstack on the rear case side. The other gearstack just slides into the case kind of working like a journal type bearing. This allows the gearstacks to separate under heavy load which only aids to the destroying of the gear teeth.

Other options like buying the cheaper and easier to find B15 gearstack and swap the gearstack from the QR18 1.8 B15 trans with the use of the B13 final Drive gear onto the lsd pack and you essentially have a P11 trans, same gearing and all.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I have been around the fwd and rwd SR20 scene for a long time and am currently going for a high 9 second pass in my daily driven street B13 SE-R. Hopefully by the end of the month. At least low 10's @140mph +

Man, that's good info. So do I use the B15 gearstack and the B13 final drive in the B13 SE-R bellhousing? Do you have any pics of your SE-R, what engine mods do you have and how much hp?

you use the 1.8 QR18 gearstack and the B13/B14 Final drive ring gear on the diff. This gives you a P11 trans essentially. The B15 trans and gearing is good for all motor use as the gears are shorter but for turbo use you definetly want to have the P11 trans.

here is a couple threads of mine on the forum

http://www.sr20-forum.com/turbo/18019-build-dyno-461whp-391wtq-25psi.html

here is the thead of my build

http://www.sr20-forum.com/turbo/17180-build-has-begun-updated-9-14-09-tune-fixed.html

here is the thread with vids of my last runs last time out.
http://www.sr20-forum.com/drag-strip/21103-11-10-131-4mph-dragstrip.html

i have since added a custom intake manifold, changed a couple minor things and will be going back out with around 550whp at approx 28psi of boost on the 60 trim.

http://www.sr20-forum.com/turbo/23941-pics-intake-manifold-installed-w-some-bling.html

If i can get the traction on some brand new 24.5X9X13 m/t's and hit all the shifts i should be darn close to my goal if not hit it. The Competition Twin Disk clutch is on the way and of course the P11 trans already got that.

My clutch is converted to hydraulic getting rid of the crappy clutch cable. All i will need later if im going to continue to go to the track often is a full cage and other minor things.

oh and that is for the B15/P11 cases. not the B13/B14. They will not work as they are very different.

Nice article, P12 VE by far is the most superior engine of them all in my book. With the limited VET that came out with the Xtrail GT these engines are sensational. The sad story is how come Pulsar's and Sentra's stopped being a fun car these days. Nissan sedans have become more "conservative". Will there be a next SR type of engineered engine in the future?

why isn't there a very strong aftermarket on performance parts for 01 nissan sentra se 2.0 (b15) which has the very sr20de motor in it? Everything I pull up is on the 200sx or 240sx! I'm looking to turbcharge it. I already have a garrett t25 turbo. A very good friend of mines said that if I incorporate a turbo and a intercooler, then I will not be able to keep the a/c. Then he said something about getting an exhaust manifold from a g20 which has the same engine.I just wanna safely turbocharge my car and keep the a/c. You guys have any suggestions or websites(not forums) on the b15? Any help would be mostly appreciated. :-)

And yeah that sentra b15 in the pic is a se-r which came standard with the qr25de. The 00-01 b15 se came standard with the sr20de motor; this person clearly did an sr swap!
